Here's the thing nobody tells you about buying a ring: the hard part was never picking it out. It's the size. You can fall in love with the perfect piece and still strike out completely if it doesn't fit — and "I'll just ask her" tends to defeat the entire purpose of a surprise.
Good news: this is a solvable problem.
1. Borrow a ring she already wears — on the correct finger
This is the most reliable method, and it's easier than it sounds. Grab a ring she wears often on the same hand and finger you're shopping for (ring size can vary slightly finger to finger, so match it exactly). Trace the inside circle onto a piece of paper, or measure the inner diameter with a ruler in millimeters. Put it back before she notices it's gone — you have more time than you think, but not unlimited time.
Once you have the measurement, compare it to the chart at the end of this post!
2. Enlist a co-conspirator
A sister, a best friend, her mom — someone who's spent enough time around her jewelry box to know, or who can find out without raising suspicion. This is exactly what "in cahoots" means, and it works.
3. Check for a size already on file or in her wishlist
If she's ever had a ring resized, cleaned, or appraised at a jeweler, there's a good chance her size is already on record somewhere. Worth a quick check before you start tracing rings at midnight.
If she has a wishlist or favorites on the website with an account, I have access to the size she picked for the ring - just contact me. Or gain access to the list directly on her computer.
4. When none of that works — there's a safety net
If you're genuinely stuck, don't let that stop you from getting started. Contact me to chat about it and we can figure it out as we go.
The part that actually matters more than the size
Because every piece is made to order, sizing is easiest to sort out early — not the week before you need it. Start now, and there's plenty of time to get it exactly right before it needs to be wrapped.
Once purchased, our rings take 3-4 weeks to be made.
